Thorne Smith was born in Chicago in 1894. He attended the University of Chicago and majored in English literature. He taught high school English and began writing and publishing with a small press in Chicago. His first book, The Rodeo Rider, was published in 1925
Two years later, he published his best-known work, "The Goat," which was a parody of the horrors of war. It was an instant success, selling over 6 million copies in its first year alone. His subsequent books included "The Last of the Belles," "The Masquerader," "The Girl Hunters," "The Girl He Left Behind Him," "The Girl He Loved" or "Suspended Animation," "Grape Nuts," "The Girl Who Danced on Air" or "Grits & Gourmet Coffee", "Surprise Party," "A Girl's Best Friend" or "More Than Just Friends", and later works include: "A Girl's Best Friend More Than Just Friends", "For Love Alone," and others.
